Inside a liquid mud plant: how an LMP stores, builds, supplies and reconditions drilling fluid

A liquid mud plant (LMP) is the shore-based or supply-base facility that builds, stores, supplies and reconditions drilling fluids for a fleet of rigs. It is not a rig mud system scaled up — it is an industrial plant in its own right, handling thousands of barrels of fluid and hundreds of tonnes of dry bulk, feeding rigs through supply vessels and taking their used mud back for reconditioning. What a mud plant does

A mud plant has four core jobs: store dry bulk and fluid, build mud to spec, supply rigs, and recondition used mud brought back from the field. It runs water-based, oil-based and synthetic muds plus clear brines, all kept strictly segregated so nothing cross-contaminates.

The bulk side

Dry weighting and viscosifying agents — barite, bentonite, cement — are stored in vertical pressure silos with aerated cones, conveyed pneumatically, weighed on load-cell hoppers, and kept dust-free by bin vents and a baghouse. This is the muscle that lets a plant weight a batch by the tonne.

The mixing side

Mud is built in agitated mixing tanks through a jet hopper whose venturi draws and wets dry additives, with a shear pump to hydrate bentonite and disperse polymers. A batch is built to a number — density, rheology, chemistry — then tested against API RP 13B and adjusted until on-spec.

The storage side

Finished fluid is held in a segregated tank farm — OBM/SBM, WBM, base oil, brine — on vertical tanks, agitated to stop barite settling and heated where rheology or crystallization demand it, all bunded for containment.

The transfer side

Rigs are supplied through supply vessels at the quay: dry bulk blown pneumatically to the manifold and silos, liquids pumped through dedicated colour-coded hoses, with ship-shore ESD and dry-break couplings against spills.

The reconditioning side

Used mud returns by vessel to a diked receiving tank, is run through shakers and centrifuges to strip solids, and goes back to storage as recovered fluid — turning expensive returned mud back into inventory rather than waste.

A mud plant is a closed loop, not a one-way supply depot. Fluid goes out to the rig, comes back used, is reconditioned, and goes out again. The whole plant is built to keep that loop turning — store, build, supply, recover, repeat.
